Check supported campaigns and setup conditions before adding qualifying responses to Google Ads lead forms
Key Takeaway
Mark some multiple-choice answers in a Search campaign lead form as qualifying, and submissions that pick them are tagged as prospects. Check whether your existing form needs a new question first.

Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 16, 2026 that the option appears in the lead form question editor. The setup conditions below come from the Google Ads Help pages (checked October 27, 2026), and anything taken from news coverage is labeled as such.
Which campaigns can use qualifying responses in lead forms?
The Help page says qualifying responses are available only for Search campaigns. The lead form asset itself works with Search and Performance Max campaigns, but nothing says qualifying responses work in a Performance Max form.
To connect a form to an existing campaign, the campaign goal must be Leads. The Help page says only one lead form asset can be added at the account level.
| Item | What the Help pages say | Where to look in your account |
|---|---|---|
| Supported campaigns | Qualifying responses: Search only. Lead form asset: Search and Performance Max | Campaign type |
| Question format | Multiple-choice question from the provided list or a custom one, with one or more answers marked qualifying | Questions in the lead form editor |
| Required or optional | Lead quality questions cannot be set as optional | Conditional answers setting |
| Submission tag | A qualifying answer tags the submission as a prospect, and a lead stage value is provided | Lead download, webhook, API |
| Conversion | A "Lead form - Qualifying response (Google-hosted)" conversion action is added automatically | Conversions list |

How do leads and conversions change?
A submission with a qualifying answer is tagged as a prospect. Each submission carries a lead stage value that reaches you through the downloaded file, a webhook, or the Google Ads API. The Help page does not list the possible stage values.
When a form with the question is in an active campaign, a conversion action of the type "Lead form - Qualifying response (Google-hosted)" is created automatically. The Help pages do not say which conversion goal it joins. Check your conversions list first.
If you send leads to a CRM, run a test submission to see what the stage value looks like. Mapping a CRM field without knowing the value names can mix prospect leads in with ordinary inquiries.
How do you add the question to an existing lead form?
The same question editor is used when you create a new form and when you edit an existing one. For a form attached to a Search campaign, the order is:
- Open the lead form linked to the Search campaign in the editor.
- Under add question, choose a multiple-choice question from the list or write a custom one. The Help page's example asks which model the person is interested in.
- Select one or more answers that are likely to convert as qualifying responses.
- Before saving, plan for the time the campaign may stay paused during policy review.
The Help page says an edited form may go through policy review, and connected campaigns are paused while it runs. Make the change outside the hours when ads must run. An existing form without a lead quality question needs one added first, and in some cases you have to create a new form.
What do the Help pages leave out?
The two Help pages I checked do not say any of the following:
- How qualifying responses feed into automated bidding
- The names and types of lead stage values
- How much lead quality or conversion rate changes after you use them
- Rollout timing by country and account
The Search Engine Roundtable report says a question can hold up to 12 answers, but the Help pages give no answer limit. Treat that number as news coverage only and confirm it in your own editor.
Limit qualifying answers to the choices that actually come up in inquiries that ended in a contract or a consultation. If nearly every answer is marked qualifying, the prospect tag no longer separates anyone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can qualifying responses be used in lead forms on Performance Max campaigns?
The Help page says qualifying responses are available only for Search campaigns. Lead form assets can also be attached to Performance Max campaigns, but the pages I checked do not say this feature is supported there.
Can a qualifying-response question be optional?
No. Lead quality questions are required, and the conditional answers setting cannot make them optional.
Do qualifying responses improve automated bidding results?
The Help pages do not describe how they affect bidding and give no performance figures. When an active campaign has the question, a conversion action is added automatically, so check which conversion goal it falls under in your conversions list.
